How to Apply to AVID

Grade-Level Requirements

Students may enter the CHCCS AVID program in grades six through eleven. To be considered for AVID, a student may self-nominate or be nominated by a teacher, counselor, parent or a current AVID student. 

When Students are Considered for the Program

Students are considered for AVID during the spring of the year that proceeds the upcoming school year. Qualifying students new to the district may be considered and admitted to the program at mid-year. An AVID student, in good academic and behavioral standing, who transfers into a CHCCS school from a different school district, may be enrolled in the program at the time of transfer.

Middle School Application

To be considered for the AVID Program in middle school a student must complete and submit an AVID Interest Form to the AVID Site Coordinator at the appropriate school. Recommendations from the student's current core subject teachers are required. Students with qualifying grade point averages (GPA), standardized test scores, attendance and discipline history, and strong teacher recommendations will be interviewed.

High School Application

Eighth Graders wishing to continue AVID in High School

Eight grade AVID students who wish to continue in the high school AVID program, must submit a Request for Continuation along with a recommendation from their current AVID teacher to the AVID Site Coordinator or counselor of the high school they will attend. Continuing students will be interviewed and their GPA, standardized test scores, attendance and discipline history will be screened along with new AVID candidates.

Eighth Graders wishing to begin AVID when they start High School

New eighth grade AVID candidates must complete and submit a High School AVID Application and submit it to the AVID Site Coordinator or counselor at the appropriate school. Recommendations from all core academic middle school teachers are required. A core team of teachers may submit one joint recommendation. Students with qualifying GPA, standardized test scores, attendance and discipline history along with strong recommendations will be interviewed.

Ninth & 10th Graders wishing to enroll in AVID

New ninth and tenth grade AVID candidates must complete and submit a High School AVID Application to the AVID Site Coordinator or counselor at the appropriate school. Recommendations from at least two current academic subject area teachers are required. A student with qualifying GPA, standardized test scores, attendance and discipline history along with strong recommendations will be interviewed.
