NC Report Card Superintendent Welcome Letter

December 1, 2015

Dear Parent or Guardian:

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) is presenting district and school performance results contained in the NC School Report Card for your review. This report card, created by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, contains information about school performance, class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality. The report card is a small piece of a larger effort to keep our community well-informed on issues pertaining to its schools.

The NC School Report Card emphasizes data as a means of measuring a school’s performance, but it is merely a snapshot. Many excellent educational experiences, which cannot be reflected on the report card, take place daily. CHCCS believes that many other aspects of school life – including the arts, world languages, athletics, and extracurricular activities – shape the school experience for our students and provide meaningful engagement for them. CHCCS will continue to provide students with high quality educational opportunities that prepare them for future challenges.

While the scores are typically higher than state and national averages, please be assured that continuous improvement efforts are both emphasized and measured. We encourage you to study the report card, but also to look behind the numbers to learn more about our schools and how we can work collaboratively to strengthen them.
The CHCCS Long-Range Strategic Plan is available here. We appreciate our partnership with you and hope that our report card will lead you to continued involvement and support of our schools. Never hesitate to call us if we can be of assistance.

Best wishes,

Thomas A. Forcella
Superintendent of Schools
