HALLOWEEN HISTORY

On October 31, children all over the United States dress in funny, scary, silly costumes and go door to door yelling, "Trick or Treat!" They hope their neighbors will drop a treat into their bag. But how did this strange but fun holiday start?

Hundreds of years ago people had a day to honor saints. That day was November 1 and it was called All Hallows Day. The night before was All Hallows Eve. People believed the spirits or ghosts of those who had died that year would come back that night looking for their bodies. No one wanted the spirits to get them, so they dressed up, acted crazy and tricked the ghosts.

Now we dress up for fun and act crazy hoping someone will give us treats instead of tricks!!
