Introduction

Writing is fun! People like to get mail. Let’s practice sending mail. You can do each task as many times as you like.

Task 1


•Write a letter to a friend at McDougle Elementary
•Address an envelope for the McDougle Postal System
•Design a stamp for your letter

Process


Choose a friend at McDougle Elementary you would like to write to.
Get a piece of paper and an envelope.
Write your letter. Click here to view a sample letter.
After writing your letter, you need to address your envelope. Click here to view a sample envelope.
Before you mail your letter, you need a stamp. Click here to design a stamp for your letter.

When you have your letter sealed in an envelope and stamped, put it in our mailbox and wait for a response.

Task 2
•Select a hospitalized child
•Record their address in your journal.
•Write a letter to them.
•Address an envelope for the U.S. Postal System.


Process

You will begin by visiting the Make a Child Smile Website. Here you will choose a child to send a letter to or you can write to their brother or sister.
In your journal, record the address of the person you are writing the letter.
Write a letter to the person. Remember, the person does not know you. Tell them about some things you like to do. Click here to view a letter.
Address the envelope with the address from your letter log. Give the letter to your teacher to mail

Task 3

•Create an internet postcard
•Send the postcard to someone in your family or your teachers

Process
You are going to visit a web site to help you create and send an postcard on the internet. To complete this task, you need the email address of a family member or a teacher. When it asks for your address, remember to use our classroom account. Click here to begin making your postcard.

Task 4

•Use the internet to find a keypal(a penpal on the internet).
•Communicate with email to a new friend.

Process

You are going to take another trip to the web. At this site you will find a friend to talk to with email. Read about the different children. Find someone who sounds like you or is from somewhere you would like to visit. Write down their name and address in your letter log. Log into our classroom email and write them a letter. Remember to tell them about you and ask them questions so they can write you back.

Evaluation

As you write different people, you need to enter your letters into your Letter Log. Each letter you send should be listed with the date in this log. If you get a letter in return, this should be entered in your log, too. Your log will be checked to see that you are participating in our letter writing project.

Conclusion

You have successfully learned how to correspond with people through the postal system and the internet. What a great way to meet new friends and keep up with old friends!
