About
Mary Scroggs Elementary School: Curriculum Mary
Scroggs Elementary uses a balanced literacy approach at all
grade levels. This balanced literacy framework takes place
during a 120-minute block inclusive of writing and spelling
and the use of fiction and nonfiction literature. The focus
is on integration of skills and strategies in meaningful
context as well as reading for comprehension. Flexible
grouping of students within a classroom allows teachers to
cluster groups of students at their instructional level.
Character
Education is taught at all grade levels at Mary Scroggs
Elementary School. The framework used to teach character
education is the HEARTWOOD ETHICS CURRICULUM. It provides
teachers with a great way to raise students' awareness of
such universal concepts as good citizenship, truthfulness,
respect and kindness -- the moral framework they need to
make appropriate choices in the future. The curriculum also
suggests real-life applications and strongly promotes
parental involvement through a wide variety of take-home
activities. Mary
Scroggs Elementary School offers its students a 60-minute,
uninterrupted block for mathematics each day at all grade
levels. The curriculum used throughout the school is the
EVERYDAY MATHEMATICS program, a K-5 program, developed by
the University of Chicago School of Mathematics Project .
The focus is on concepts not drill. Math is integrated into
other subject areas and is part of the ongoing classroom
routines, outdoor play, and the spare transitional moments
that occur every day. Highlights include: problem-solving
about everyday situations; linking past experiences to new
concepts; sharing ideas through discussion; developing
concept readiness through hands-on activities and
explorations; cooperative learning through partner and
small-group activities; and enhancing home-school
partnerships. Mary
Scroggs Elementary School has a 45-minute block for science.
The school also houses an outdoor science lab, the Pollywog
Pavilion. In Summer 2000, the school secured a UTOTES grant,
through which the teachers in the school will work closely
with educators at the North Carolina Museum of Natural
Science in Raleigh. Beginning in the fall of 2004 the
science curriculum will be supported by a science specialist
and a science classroom. The
schedule for the school day supports the curriculum by
providing for 45 minutes for social studies. North
Carolina Standard Course of Study The NC
State Department of Public Education designed the Standard
Course of Study to be followed by all public schools. For

Course of Study
